The finalized calendar of events for the children’s summer reading program is now available. From the Kids Only! page, click on “Events Calendar” and then go to June and July to see the events that are scheduled.
The kickoff for the children’s program, cowboy breakfast and rodeo, will be on Thursday, June 4, rain or shine, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Kelly’s Kids/Windsong Farm, 2401 Southwestern Blvd. (old CR 110) which is located just north of the intersection of Southwestern Blvd. and the Inner Loop. Joe McDermott headlines this event and Arvis Green will be painting little faces that morning.
After that, the general schedule for weekly children’s programs during June and July is
-
Tuesdays at 10:30, performances and programs for kids younger than 7 and Craft ‘n’ Tale for those who are 7 and older.
-
Wednesdays at 10:30, performances for all ages
-
Thursdays at 10:30, storytime with Mary Beth Huba or other performances
This year, all Texas Reading Club registrations and book logs will be online. See the Summer Reading Program 2009 section on our web page for full information. We will have computers available at the library that you may use if you don’t have a home computer. The program we’re using to keep track of the kids’ reading also allows them to write book reviews online and to receive instant notification when they have read enough to reach a prize level.
A new aspect of this year’s program is a competition among Georgetown’s elementary schools to see which school’s students read the most books (or spend the most time reading) during the summer. When the kids register, they will enter the name of their school. At the end of the summer we will be able to sort the online logs by school to tally the total number of books each school’s students have read. The winning school will be treated in the fall to a performance by a professional entertainer.
