Summer Programs 2009 — Week 3

June 25th, 2009 by Judy F
  • On Tuesday Doodlebug made the younger kids laugh and members of the audience got into the act.
  • That afternoon Mrs. Huba put on her chef’s hat and taught a large group of Tweens the basics of decorating cakes.
  • On Wednesday Schave and Reilly were silly but turned out to be great jugglers.
  • Thursday Mrs. Huba returned to do another storytime session in the morning. Ms. Boutwell also came and made balloon toys for the kids. Somehow the kids found time to see how many could pile into the Jeep at once.
  • Thursday afternoon Mrs. Huba resumed the cake decorating class. Many beautifully decorated cakes resulted from the kids’ hard work!
  • And on Friday Angela Plunkett and her daughters gave the Tweens a beginning sewing lesson. Concentration and learning new skills were the order of the afternoon, but everyone had lots of fun, too.

Summer Programs 2009 — Week 1

June 10th, 2009 by Judy F

Mr. Leebot entertained the little kids Tuesday morning while the older ones crafted away with Ms. Laura, making a Texas rattlesnake.

On Wednesday morning Mr. Puppet, a perennial favorite for our summer programs, put on his new show, Deep in the Heart of Texas. Of course, Ms. Rosa hammed it up before the show was over! A new feature of the Wednesday morning programs is a trivia quiz with candy prizes for the correct answers. There will be two opportunities to win, one by putting your written answer to the Texas question in a drawing, the other by answering correctly the “Wheel of Fortune” question. Today’s questions were “What is Texas’ most important natural resource?” and “What country is south of Texas?” Start studying!

Finally, on Thursday Mr. Miller brought some of his martial arts students to demonstrate their skills. And the audience got to try out some of the moves!

Thanks for a Great Kickoff!

June 8th, 2009 by Judy F

long-line

Patience was the word at the kickoff of the summer reading program last Thursday morning. Hundreds of kids and their chaperones converged on Windsong Farm to enjoy a rodeo, music by Joe McDermott, face painting by Arvis, and marvelous balloon animals made by Zippy the Clown. And there was food-breakfast tacos and pancakes. Although the volunteers were numerous and the cooks were working furiously, lines for the food, face painting, and balloons became very long. However, no one who waited was disappointed, and after heading for his vehicle to go home, Zippy even returned to his station to create a balloon creature for a late-coming little one. Click on the Photos & Media tab, then Kids Events to see some photos from the event.

Many thanks to the Clayman Family who so generously hosted the event and provided the rodeo action. Thanks, too, to McDonald’s for providing the drinks and cups. Among the faithful volunteers who helped with setting up, cleaning up, managing lines and crowds, and helping with the food preparation and service were the Abes-Debbie, Stephanie, and Caroline, Lori Barker, Marla Brown, Chris Carpenter, Terri Hahn, Rachel Mahagan, Linda Mahaffey, Martha and Christian Paul, Sadaf and Sarah Rafique, Ashlyn Wade, and the Youngs-Diana, Alison and Erika.

Those of you who are veterans of the Georgetown Public Library’s summer reading programs know that Ms. Rosa stretches her budget as far as possible to provide good entertainment and food throughout the summer. Our children’s department has only two full-time and two half-time staff members, so without volunteers she would never be able to make her plans work. We’re proud that Ms. Rosa’s reputation for having the best summer program in the area attracts parents and kids from all over Williamson County. Please remember this and be patient when conditions become crowded. We’re doing the best we can with our resources.
